Join me in congratulating the newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Chitwood! I had the pleasure of photographing this romantic destination wedding in Cabo, Mexico this past winter. It was a dream to say the least and I couldn’t be happier for Joe and Megan!
I have known Megan and her family for 10 years because her cousin is one of my best friends! Megan was one of my first clients back when I photographed her senior photos in 2014! How crazy is that?! I have loved capturing so many of her family’s milestones and I was thrilled when Megan reached out after getting engaged!
So, picture this: stunning sunsets, waves crashing, palm trees dancing in the wind, never-ending food and drinks, and love lingering in the air. That’s the scene at Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort in Cabo, Mexico, where I recently captured the most breathtaking wedding. And let me tell you, the backdrop alone was worth the trip! I flew in two days before the wedding to scout the wedding venue and portrait locations, prep all my gear for the big day and get to know more of Joe and Megan’s friends and family.
Planning A Destination Wedding
First off, let’s talk about the vibe. Destination weddings are all about beauty, intimacy, and connection. At Secrets Puerto Los Cabos, it felt like the whole resort was our own private paradise. The staff was incredible and catered to your every need. No need to stress about cooking for everyone or planning meals because everyone has every type of food you could want at your fingertips at any time of the day.
Let’s talk about the benefits of how a destination wedding brings people closer. As a photographer, I have a love-hate relationship with photographing candids of guests at a wedding. I love it because I know how important is to the couples and they are raw moments captured, but the part I hate is not feeling the connection to the guests like the bride and groom do. I know these people are important because they are invited by the bride and groom, but everyone feels like a stranger and people give you weird looks, because you’re a stranger to them and taking photos while they drink or talk to people. It feels like you’re invading their personal bubble sometimes.
However, taking photos at Joe and Megan’s wedding felt far from that all because I got to spend time with them at the resort for two whole days before the wedding. Plus the guests all got to know each other so well too! We all mingled at the pool, I met the wedding party and more family at the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, and we all got to know each other with more one-on-one conversations! This made photographing the wedding SO much more fun because I understood who people were and their importance to the couple. Every moment felt genuine and heartfelt because everyone felt like they knew everyone, which means people were more comfortable in front of the camera and candids were SO fun!
Destination Wedding Logistics
Now, I know what you’re thinking: planning a wedding from miles away sounds like a logistical nightmare, right? Wrong! Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Resort and its staff have this whole planning thing down to a science. Their wedding coordinators are absolute pros, taking care of every little detail so the couple can focus on what truly matters: each other. When doing a destination wedding, I highly recommend hiring a planner or coordinator because you want your guests and family to ENJOY your wedding and not have it feel like a job.
And can we talk about the celebration? A destination wedding isn’t just a one-day affair; it’s an entire experience. From beachside cocktails to exploring the local culture, every moment is filled with adventure and joy. And let’s not forget about the post-wedding relaxation—snorkeling, spa treatments, you name it!
But what truly sets a destination wedding apart are the memories. I mean, imagine exchanging vows as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. It’s the stuff of dreams, my friends. As a photographer, capturing those moments at Secrets Puerto Los Cabos for Joe and Megan was an absolute honor.
A big thank you to Joe and Megan for trusting me to capture their special day. A destination wedding in Cabo, Mexico was a dream come true. It was a blast to watch them celebrate with their closest family and friends. The dance floor was a party and it was evident how much they love their “I do” crew! If you’re considering a destination wedding, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m in Florida all the time but am up for traveling anywhere, and you best believe I will be returning to Mexico!!
